Pittsburgh has been selected to host the United Nations Environment Program’s World Environment Day in North America in June 2010 -- an event local government and corporate leaders heralded today as yet another major opportunity for the city to share the story of its transformation from a heavy industrialized to green-based economy.
During an announcement this morning at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh on the North Side, Elisabeth Guilbaud-Cox, deputy director of UNEP, said several factors contributed to Pittsburgh’s selection including its significance as the birthplace of environmentalist Rachel Carson and because the city recently hosted the G-20 summit.
Bayer Corp., the German-based chemicals company with U.S. headquarters in Robinson, spearheaded the effort to attract the event here.
Officials involved with the planning said the event will include a series of activities that "bridge the gap" between Earth Day, celebrated April 22, and World Environment Day on June 5.
